Soft Armor and Concealable Vests

Soft armor is the light, flexible protection most police wear every day. It is built from layers of aramid fibers like Kevlar or polyethylene fibers that catch and spread out a bullet’s energy.

Concealable or overt

A concealable vest is worn under a shirt and keeps a low profile. An overt vest is worn on the outside and has room for pouches and ID patches. Many vests use the same ballistic panels inside.

What it stops

Soft armor is usually rated HG1 or HG2 under NIJ 0101.07, or Level II and IIIA under the older standard. It is not built for rifle rounds. For rifle threats, add hard plates. See Armor Levels.

Living with soft armor

  • Fit matters: the vest should cover the vitals without riding up when you sit.
  • Wear a moisture-wicking shirt underneath in hot weather.
  • Never fold or crease the panels, and follow the label for cleaning.
  • Replace it when the warranty runs out or after it takes a hit.
