Side Plates and Backpack Armor

Front and back plates cover the most important vitals, but they leave gaps. Side plates and backpack inserts fill in coverage for different situations.

Side plates

Side plates are small, usually 6 x 6 or 6 x 8 inches. They slide into pockets in the cummerbund and protect the area under your arms. They add weight, so many shooters add them only when the mission calls for it.

Backpack inserts

A backpack insert is a soft or hard panel shaped to fit in a backpack. It is easy to carry every day, but it only protects you when the pack is between you and the threat.

Check the rating

Side plates and inserts are rated like any other armor. Read the label and match the level to your other plates. See Armor Levels.
